Woodworking

May and June Work

I had a variety of contract jobs in May and June. Here are a few examples of the pieces that I made.

A 2.4 m wide TV unit made from walnut veneered MDF with a solid walnut lipping. There is a heavy chamfer to the front face which creates an ‘inset’ front face and leads to the cabinet being constructed in a mitred fashion. The four doors have solid oak raised inlays and centre panels. It is necessary to have an insert on the inside of the doors to ensure that they are ‘balanced’ and do not warp as the wood expands and contracts. The walnut is finished with Rubio Monocoat black and the oak is finished in a grey Rubio – which caused a bit of a headache but it looks fantastic in the end.

A pair of wee bedside tables in oak. Solid oak tops in an ellipse shape with an ovolo edge and quirk. Ellipse shaped cabinets made from stacked MDF layers and manually veneered with one continuous piece. Curved drawer fronts also manually veneered. Solid oak legs inset into the body and notched into the lower shelf. Finished with Osmo clear satin.

A console table in oak. Noteworthy because of the single wide and shallow drawer which required a lot of fettling to get it to run smoothly without too much racking, and the solid back panel which is captured in a groove in the top, legs and bottom shelf. Seen here unfinished and without a drawer handle.
