Character Oak Chest of Drawers

A short wee post to talk about this chest of drawers that I was asked to make at the start of August. I have only got this one photo so I’ll just describe it for you.

The cabinet itself is unpainted in the photo but it is due to be painted a dark brown (almost black) colour, and the drawers will be lacquered.

The top is MDF and has been lipped all round to a double-thickness. The side panels of the cabinet are MDF also but have been lipped with beech to give a harder wearing edge with the round-over. The base is solid beech for strength and the curved corners were cut separately with a hole-saw and glued in place. Given that it will be painted this is an acceptable way of making this feature. The ‘cabinet’ section has an MDF base and this allows it to be securely attached to the beech base.

The drawers were solid oak throughout and dovetailed in all four corners. The fronts are also solid oak and are veneered on their outer faces with the character oak construction veneer that you see here. Soft close runners are used and are a good solution here because the drawers are quite tall but also relatively shallow.

Overall the cabinet dimensions are W1000 x H990 x D420 mm.
